One of the most characteristic and beautiful steppe mesoxeric species. The massive presence of this species in grasslands, in contrast with the congeneric Echium italicum and Echium vulgare (which are most frequently found as ruderals) stands for a good conservation status of them, Echium russicum being not tolerant to overgrazing and ruderalization. Though this is a very good indicator species in this respect when present in large populations.
